Certified Crane Operator – Job Description

Position Summary

The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of company cranes to perform lifting, rigging, and transport tasks. This position requires an experienced operator who can handle a variety of job sites, including construction, recovery, and specialized lifts. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, and capable of working flexible hours, including occasional weekends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate hydraulic cranes to lift, move, and position loads safely and efficiently
  • Perform pre-lift planning, including load calculations, rigging selection, and site assessment
  • Execute a variety of lifts, including HVAC units, steel, equipment, trusses, and recovery support
  • Set up crane (outriggers, cribbing, leveling) according to job requirements
  • Inspect crane and rigging equipment daily and report any maintenance needs
  • Communicate effectively with ground personnel, customers, and dispatch
  • Complete accurate job tickets, crane logs, and documentation
  • Follow all OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards
  • Maintain the cleanliness and proper care of the crane and equipment
  • Assist with shop or field support work when not actively operating

Schedule & Availability Requirements

  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends
  • Must be able to respond to scheduled and emergency jobs with short notice

Qualifications

  • Proven experience operating hydraulic cranes (certification preferred)
  • Valid CDL (Class A or B preferred) with acceptable driving record
  • NCCCO Certification (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
  • Strong knowledge of rigging practices and load charts
  • Ability to read and interpret lift plans and job specifications
  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of equipment operation
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and handle rigging equipment (50+ lbs)
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Capable of climbing, balancing, bending, and standing for extended periods

Position Summary

The Heavy Wrecker Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy-duty tow and recovery equipment to assist disabled, damaged, or impounded commercial vehicles. This role requires strong mechanical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to respond to emergency calls, including nights, weekends, and scheduled on-call shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy-duty wreckers for towing and recovery of semi-trucks, trailers, buses, and heavy equipment
  • Perform accident recovery, winching, uprighting, and load shifts
  • Respond promptly to dispatch calls and maintain communication with dispatch and customers
  • Complete accurate job documentation, tickets, and required paperwork (Towbook or company system)
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness and basic upkeep of trucks and equipment
  • Follow all DOT, OSHA, and company safety procedures
  • Provide professional, courteous customer service always
  • Assist in light shop duties or maintenance when not on calls

Schedule & Availability Requirements

  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Participation in mandatory on-call rotation
  • On-call operators must:
  • Remain within a designated response area
  • Be reachable by phone at all times during scheduled shifts
  • Respond to calls promptly and safely

Qualifications

  • Valid CDL (Class A required) with acceptable driving record
  • Previous heavy towing/recovery experience preferred (training may be provided for the right candidate)
  • Ability to safely operate heavy-duty towing and recovery equipment
  • Strong understanding of vehicle mechanics and rigging techniques
  • Ability to work in high-pressure and emergencies
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening
